Video: How to Care for Customers Without Burning Yourself Out

Care can be your strength, but it can also quickly become your weakness and lead to sales burnout. Most salespeople and managers don’t burn out because customers demand too much. They burn out because they assume everything is urgent, assume deadlines, say ‘yes’ too fast, and create the self-imposed fear and pressure, before asking the customer what they need.

That follow-up and proposal you rushed and promised tomorrow. That, “I’ll get it right over to you,” reaction. All based on this costly assumption.

“If I don’t serve them immediately, someone else will.”

When caring turns into overextending, and becoming a “Yes-aholic,” it violates your boundaries, and impacts customer value, performance, your energy, and quality of life.

Before you assume what customers need and by when, ask this one defining question.

“What’s the latest you need this by?”

Maybe they’re going on vacation and may not need it until next week. This question enforces boundaries, protects time, lowers stress, creates realistic accountability, and keeps the sale moving forward, without burnout.

Great service is not defined by you. It’s defined by the customer.
